Touch controls that don't make you want to quit

The fastest way to lose me on a mobile game is bad controls. Virtual joysticks that drift, buttons crammed under your thumb, tilt steering with no dead zone. It doesn't matter how good the game underneath is if I fight the screen every second.

The best schemes we've reviewed share a few things. Big, forgiving hit areas. Controls that stay out of the way until you need them. And crucially, options. Games that let you switch between tilt and buttons, or reposition the controls, almost always feel better within an hour.

One-thumb designs deserve special praise when done right. Coin Strike is a good example of a game built entirely around a single input that still feels precise. When a developer commits to a control idea fully, it usually beats trying to cram console controls onto glass.

If you're struggling with a game, check whether there's a control-layout option before you write it off. More games offer them than you'd expect, and a five-minute tweak can change everything.
