Why your phone gets hot during mobile games

We test a lot of games on an intentionally old phone, and the same handful of things drain the battery over and over. Uncapped frame rates are the biggest offender. Most games let you cap at 30 or 60 in the settings, and doing so often halves the heat with barely any visible difference.

Background particle effects and dynamic reflections are the next culprits. They look nice in screenshots but rarely change how a game feels to play. Turning them down is usually the single best trade you can make on a weaker device.

Screen brightness matters more than people think, too. Auto-brightness cranked to full outdoors will cook your battery faster than the game engine itself. Locking it a notch lower helped in almost every title we tested.

None of this is exotic. Spend two minutes in a game's settings menu before your first long session and you'll thank yourself on a train with no outlet.
